Brookside: Background, Boundaries & Borders

Background:
Brookside is lovely area in Kansas City, Missouri with character and charm. It has become increasingly popular due to its proximity to the Country Club Plaza, UMKC, parks and museums.  J.C. Nichols developed it in the late 1920’s, and it was the city’s first suburban shopping area. The Brookside Business Association (1939) now has more than 70 unique shops, restaurants, grocery stores, and bars.  Each owner maintains the common areas and parking, and each keeps the original architecture.

Residential Boundaries:
The residential neighborhood begins at 51st and Wornall. Currently, there is not a Brookside Homes Association.  Without an official Association, the exact boundaries are unclear.  I contacted the Brookside Business Association for residential boundaries.  “What are the residential borders?”  The staff member was helpful and quick to respond.  She told me that this has been a topic of debate.  Each subdivision is clearly defined, and most agree which subdivisions comprise the Brookside residential neighborhood.  Armour Hills, Astor Place, Kingston, Morningside, Oak Meyer Garden, and Rockhill Ridge are among these.

Housing:
Tudors, Bungalows and Colonials OH MY!  The housing options accommodate a wide variety.  From cozy 2-bedroom Bungalows, to grand three-story colonials, Brookside has options that appeal to many homeowners. There is something for singles, couples, and large families.  Walking distance to parks and playgrounds, and also just blocks from an active night scene.
